Benefits
The benefits of learning these practices are many. Learning to defend yourself can develop self-confidence and self-esteem. These practices also enable you to relieve stress, reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance and coordination plus many other health benefits. These attributes are essential to the development of well-rounded students filled with compassion for others and their community.
URBAN TACTICAL SURVIVAL
Today’s modern environment requires a practical and flexible approach to self-defense for yourself and your family. The days of going to your local Martial Arts Dojo or Mixed Martial Arts gym for personal self-defense is well-meaning but sadly inadequate.
It’s not enough to be able to punch a lone mugger or choke out some bully in a local tavern. Increasingly self-defense involves multiple opponents often armed with improvised weapons or planned attacks using edged weapons and firearms.
Modern self-defense requires an integration of practical martial arts skills, military tactics and street-smart practicality. Urban Tactical Academy is a school for learning the most practical, effective self-defense programs available. Drawing from a multitude of self-defense systems, we offer a well rounded approach to learning self-defense encompassing the most effective martial arts systems and practices. Whether you are interested in a traditional martial arts experience or just looking to learn a basic course for self-defense that works on the street we can accommodate you.
Not everybody that comes to us has the same goal for learning self-defense. Therefore we don't teach everyone the same material. We offer a variety of small easy to learn courses on a multitude of topics that appeal to many different types of students. We offer Modular courses for serious professionals in law enforcement/military careers as well as basic self-defense for everyday civilians who want to protect themselves and their families.
When you train at Urban Kombat, you will learn in a comfortable environment in small groups. We don't have large classes and our small group offerings allow us to teach almost everyone as if they were getting a private lesson. This unique setting allows us to give our students more material at a deeper level of understanding than you would get in a traditional martial arts school.
MILITARY TACTICS
Our self-defense principles have been used by elite military units, Govt. agencies and Law Enforcement personnel for decades. The principles of the RAT System (Rapid Assault Tactics) as well as Edged Weapons have been used to teach numerous operators that need to defend themselves in a variety of situations and environments. We utilize the military mindset as a foundation for ensuring our approach to self-defense remains practical, efficient and effective.
Our modular approach is directly influenced by the way our military designs training programs. We delete material that is not absolutely critical to the subject we are teaching. When you take a course on Rapid Assault Tactics or Edged Weapons etc. we do not teach anything that won't be crucial to the subject you're learning. You'll find that we don't teach any Kata-like pre-arranged movements, Static stances or fancy techniques. Instead, we focus on targeting, attribute development and sound principles for self-defense.
What's a modular system?
Here at Urban Kombat our training is compartmentalized into a variety of easy to learn programs that build on each other and address specific aspects of self-defense. This allows our students to determine their own goals with a flexible timetable depending on what they want to accomplish. By using these different modules, students make faster progress and are able to fine tune specific skills. Each modular course contains a blend of martial arts combined with specific military technology. This method allows students to make the most progress in a particular curriculum. We can teach a complete course over ten hours on a weekend. We schedule the weekend course from 10:30-5PM and a break for lunch. The cost of each course is dependent on how many attendees and which course you want to take. Some courses cost more than others.
Costs:
Each module varies in price depending on which module you purchase and how many training partners we are able to book for a session or weekend. Our most basic course like the RAT Module is not as expensive as our Edged Weapons course. Our preferred number of students is 4-8 as it allows us to teach material in an intimate environment similar to a private lesson while keeping costs low.
Which Martial Arts?
When it comes to martial arts for today’s environment, who should one look to for inspiration and knowledge but the legendary Bruce Lee? Lee, the founder and developer of Jeet Kune Do was one of the first martial artist to incorporate different methods from a variety of martial arts to develop his own system. His modern approach to personal development through combat was revolutionary and ground breaking. His journey of personal discovery led him to develop some of the most innovative concepts in combat training the world had ever seen. Jeet Kune Do and the concepts he used, form the basis of our martial arts curriculum. His protégé, friend and longtime student Dan Inosanto was just as influential in bringing the Filipino Martial Arts (also called Kali) to the attention of the martial art world after Bruce’s death. In addition, the influence of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has seen an explosion in popularity since its introduction to the world in the early 90s. While the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the best-known organization, there are many different fighting organizations that use this sport centric style of fighting. By incorporating these three systems we can address any self-defense situation.
Benefits:
The martial arts we incorporate have been selected for their compatibility with each other. This makes it easy to transition from one art to another so that you can deal with any encounter. We teach a blend of arts that work in every range of combat from stand up Kickboxing, Boxing and Trapping to Grappling range. We teach you the basics of arts in order to adapt to any situation from Empty-Hand to a weapons encounter to multiple opponent scenarios.
Costs:
By blending the arts that work together harmoniously our students can learn the elements of each art that are relevant to self-defense. Instead of learning the entirety of a whole art which could take five years or more, you can learn the most important aspects of each art in a short amount of time. When you consider the cost of studying the number of arts at our disposal and how long it would take to learn them, the cost of learning these arts by themselves is prohibitive and expensive.
TRAINING MODULES
Edged Weapons Principles
As the name implies, this course deals with every type of edged weapon from swords to pocket knives. Our Edged Weapons Principles is a crash course that teaches you the most important aspects of dealing with a blade.
Drawing from drills and principles from the Filipino Martial Arts and of course our military tactics, you will turbocharge your attributes for any combat situation. The Edged Weapons course will develop cat-like reflexes, footwork and smooth body-mechanics. You will increase your speed and the ability to close the gap on your opponent.
The Edged Weapons Principles course is one of the most intensive training programs we teach. There are a lot of basic principles that must be adhered to in an encounter with a blade that must be followed in order to survive.
One cut from a knife or broken bottle can end the fight, scar you for life or end your life. Some of the tactics you will learn will be:
De-Fang the Snake
Defend against Multiple Opponents
Unarmed defense against a knife
Use of improvised weapons
This is our most popular course and for good reason. Highly recommended for our military and law enforcement clients.
Rapid Assault Tactics
Straight from the US Navy SEALs curriculum, this course was used by actual operators on high risk missions. This is our most basic module that relies on military tactics and simple, easy to learn techniques. A brutal and effective way to defend yourself with only your empty hands.
The RAT system has been used for helping people defend themselves for decades. By distilling the most effective components from Jeet Kune Do, The Filipino Martial Arts and Muay Thai Boxing, we are able to cut out unnecessary and inefficient techniques. This course emphasizes quick entries, Centerline Theory and follow-up techniques that can end an encounter quickly and decisively.
Law Enforcement
De-Escalation Series
This module incorporates tactics used by many Police Departments across the country and Govt. agencies including FBI, DOJ and Homeland Security. This course enables law enforcement officers to de-escalate situations and or subdue a resistant suspect.
We incorporate a Force Continuum model with multiple levels of threat assessment and corresponding force training. We cover low threat response with officer presence, up to higher levels requiring locks and immobilization techniques and escalations up to deadly force responses.
There are many martial artists and security types out there teaching the same techniques. However, few will have the attribute training and drills that we provide to make these techniques work in a real world environment.
Without the proper understanding of combat principles and attribute development, a lot of the techniques will be difficult pull off outside of the classroom. This course is also popular with security professionals such as bodyguards and nightclub security personnel.

Jeet Kune Do Trapping
This is an advanced level course for learning the close range infighting methods popularized by the late Bruce Lee and countless Filipino masters.
This course breaks down the principles of trapping and how arts like Wing Chun and Kali approach fighting in trapping range. The integration of empty hand trapping and trapping with weapons will be taught as well as blending different arts into your own personal system.
It is recommended that students interested in this course first have a basic understanding of kicking and boxing skills.
Grappling Tactics for
Street Defense
From the “Stand-Up Clinch” range to Jiu-Jitsu style ground fighting, a big percentage of fights end up on the ground. It’s important to know how to stay upright, escape from the ground and inflict damage while you are engaged.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art with a rich history of competition in Brazil and through out the world and is one of the most popular of all the martial arts. The style is designed to enable the practitioner to submit his opponent with joint locks, chokes and in competition they use a point system as well.
BJJ develops a tactile sense of awareness needed for surviving an encounter when you are taken to the ground.
Combat Sambo is a military art from Russia. The emphasis in this art is to inflict damage on the opponent in a short amount of time. While some of the techniques in Sambo and BJJ overlap, it is a completely different art with a more violent mindset.
Kino Mu Tai is a Pinching and biting art from the Filipino Martial Arts. The extreme violence developed in this art is an assault on the opponents' mind and senses. The vicious techniques like Eye Gouging, Biting of the Face or sensitive parts of the body is reserved for that life or death struggle that might happen once in a lifetime.
